Parenting Program Sparks Gender Norm Shift in Central River Region

June 20, 2020

In Nianija District  in the Central River Region, a powerful shift is happening. Men are stepping up as active caregivers, redefining what it means to parent. Traditionally, caregiving was seen as a woman’s responsibility, but ChildFund’s Responsive and Protective Parenting program is changing that. With support from The World Bank, over 1,600 parents and caregivers, especially men, have learned how to play, nurture, and protect their children. From making toys with local materials to learning positive discipline techniques, these fathers are breaking traditional gender roles and embracing their role in raising their children.

Fathers like Alhagie are living proof of the transformation. Once reluctant to take part in their children’s day-to-day care, they now spend quality time with their children, understanding the importance of nurturing and positive parenting.

“One of the best things that I learnt from the parenting sessions is that we should not be beating our children. I was fond of beating my children, and sometimes I beat them so severely that they even suffered bruises. But since attending the sessions, I now stop beating them, and they get closer to me, and surprisingly, they do everything that I ask them to do,” said Alhagie Sallah. Watch the stories of change and witness how these caregivers are nurturing their children for a brighter, more positive future.

In 2025, ChildFund Gambia allocated 92% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
