In any crisis, children's needs must come first.

The Gambia, like many countries in the region, faces a range of challenges including the impacts of environmental changes, public health emergencies, and socio-economic difficulties. The country has also been affected by health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which have worsened vulnerabilities, especially for children. These crises disrupted essential services including education, health care, and child protection, leaving children at increased risk.

The Foni region, bordering Senegal’s Casamance area, is particularly vulnerable due to ongoing conflict and displacement that exacerbate the challenges faced by children and families. For over two decades, ChildFund has focused its emergency response efforts on supporting education, child protection, food aid and the overall wellbeing of children and families in The Gambia.

Our Impact

Our Approach

ChildFund is committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to access and complete a quality education in a safe and supportive environment. We work closely with governments and key partners to protect children in schools, homes, and communities, recognizing that learning can only thrive where children feel safe and valued.

In addition, ChildFund provides direct support to schools to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning, helping to create inclusive, child-friendly environments where all children, especially the most vulnerable, can reach their full potential.

When disaster strikes, ChildFund acts quickly to address the urgent needs of children and families. In the face of floods, disease outbreaks, or conflict, we deliver essential supplies such as food, clean water, hygiene kits, and temporary shelter to stabilize families and prevent further harm to children.

We also prioritize child protection, setting up safe spaces for children to play, learn, and receive psychosocial support. These immediate interventions safeguard children from exploitation, abuse, and the trauma that can result from a crisis.

Once a crisis subsides, we work with families, communities, and local authorities to rebuild lives. This includes rehabilitating schools so children can return to education and supporting families in restoring their livelihoods.

By partnering with community leaders, local organizations, and government agencies, we ensure recovery efforts are both effective and sustainable. This collaborative approach strengthens resilience, equipping communities with the tools to better handle future emergencies.

Children’s education and health are among the most disrupted areas during emergencies. Schools are often damaged, closed, or repurposed as shelters, while healthcare systems become overwhelmed. As part of our emergency response, we work to restore access to education through temporary learning spaces and by distributing learning materials to children.

Child protection stands at the center of ChildFund’s emergency response. In times of crisis, children face heightened risks of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and trafficking. ChildFund takes a systems approach to child protection, working alongside families, communities, and government institutions to build safe, supportive environments for children.

Through community child protection committees, communities identify at-risk children and deliver immediate, life-saving interventions. ChildFund strengthens these efforts by equipping caregivers and community members with knowledge of children's rights and the critical importance of protection during and after emergencies.

ChildFund raises community awareness of disaster risks by working in close partnership with local partners, government agencies, and development organizations. Together, we strengthen community preparedness by supporting the development of practical, functional disaster response mechanisms.

We train local leaders, organizations, and families to identify and mitigate the risks of floods, disease outbreaks, bush fires and unsustainable practices such as charcoal burning, and other crises. These interventions equip communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prepare for and respond to emergencies, in order to reduce vulnerability and build long-term resilience.

Effective emergency response requires strong collaboration. ChildFund works closely with government agencies, NGOs, and international bodies to align its interventions with national and global humanitarian strategies. In The Gambia, we partner with the National Disaster Management Agency and the Gambia Red Cross Society to deliver timely and coordinated emergency support.

At the community level, ChildFund engages local leaders and grassroots organizations to deliver culturally appropriate, needs-driven responses. This partnership model not only strengthens immediate action but also supports long-term recovery.

How we Support Children & Families after Emergencies

We Provide Relief

To Children, Families  and Communities affected  by emergencies in the form of food,  clean water and  other essentials, like blankets and hygiene kits. Depending on the situation, we may distribute these items directly to affected families or give them funds  to purchase what  they need most.

We Establish Child-Centered Spaces

To give Children a safe place  to play, learn and just  be kids – activities that are crucial to their recovery from the trauma of emergencies.  These spaces protect the children and allow their parents time to find shelter, food, water and other help they need.

We Promote Education

On disaster preparedness so that  when emergencies happen, children, families and communities  know how to respond and can recover more quickly.

Featured Project

ChildFund establishes child friendly space for children affected by the conflict in the Foni Belt

The ongoing conflict in the Foni belt, a 75 km stretch along The Gambia’s border with Senegal’s Casamance region, has uprooted thousands since 1981, leaving children among the most vulnerable. Displacement and violence expose them to heightened risks of abuse, exploitation, and psychological trauma.

In emergencies, while caregivers focus on securing shelter, food, and water, children often face neglect and separation from family, increasing their exposure to harm. Recognizing this urgent need, ChildFund places child protection at the heart of its emergency response.

In partnership with the Foni Ding Ding Federation, ChildFund provides displaced families with shelter, food, and essentials, while establishing Child-Friendly Spaces, safe environments where children can play, learn, receive psychological support, and regain a sense of normalcy. These spaces promote children’s rights to safety and emotional well-being, ensuring they are protected even amid conflict. Watch this video to learn more about this initiative.

Helping Communities to Combat Drought

ChildFund supports families affected by drought through emergency food distribution, safe water access, cash transfers, school feeding programs, dignity kits for girls and boys, and animal feed for livestock.
