Isatou, a sponsored student is now a nurse at her community clinic

Abubaccar, a former sponsored child, is now a leading contractor in The Gambia’s construction industry. He is the Founder and CEO of Space Engineering and Construction Enterprise.
“I was sponsored by ChildFund since when I was in Grade 1. Through Foni Ding Ding Federation (ChildFund’s local partner operating in the West Coast Division). All my educational needs were covered. This included books, pens, pencils, school bags, shoes, uniform, and a bicycle to ride to and from school.
I moved to Senior Secondary School where I studied Science, and when I graduated there, I chose to study nursing. My nursing study program was funded by ChildFund, and they also gave me all the materials that I needed for my practical classes.
I chose to become a nurse because I have seen many people in my community struggle to get medical care. So, working here back in my community today as a nurse in our community clinic, which was also built by ChildFund, and is still supported especially through regular pharmaceutical supplies, makes me feel extremely proud.
Now it all makes sense because we were always told by ChildFund staff that they wanted us to become educated, skilled, and involved in the development of our communities and country.
Our clinic at Kassangne receives up to 15 patients a day, and even more on Mondays. We also offer maternity services, including child delivery at the facility. This has reduced the burden on women who otherwise would have to struggle to reach the nearest health facility. Even reaching the main road from here is a challenge.
Without ChildFund’s support, I wouldn’t have reached this level because quality education is expensive, and my family would not have been able to fund my education. I chose to become a nurse because I have seen many people in my community struggle to get medical care.
So, working here back in my community today as a nurse in our community clinic, which was also built by ChildFund, and is still supported especially through regular medicine and pharmaceutical supplies, makes me feel extremely proud.”
