The Borehole That Brought Back Learning

September 22, 2026

For decades, Niani Sukuta Senior Secondary School operated without access to a reliable source of clean water, forcing students and staff to walk between 3 and 5 kilometers to fetch water. This persistent challenge disrupted learning, contributed to early school closures, and discouraged student enrollment.

Through the support of ChildFund, in partnership with the Foni Ding Ding Federation, the construction of a new borehole has transformed the school and surrounding communities. The borehole now serves the school and two neighboring communities, providing safe and accessible water for hundreds of people. Improved access to water has enhanced the learning environment, reduced the burden on students and staff, and contributed to a remarkable increase in school enrollment, from just 6 students to over 50 students.

In 2025, ChildFund Gambia allocated 92% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
