Abubacarr’s story as a sponsored child is profoundly inspiring. 

Just three years after volunteering to help install directional signage at the ChildFund The Gambia country office, Abubacarr reached a remarkable milestone: he secured a multi-million Dalasi construction contract from Saama Kairo Federation, a local partner of ChildFund.

His assignment? To build a youth-friendly centre — the first of its kind in the West Coast Region. This groundbreaking facility will serve as a hub for young people and children to learn, innovate, and thrive. This space is designed to create a safe environment for young people to exchange ideas, promote innovation and creativity, and access essential resources for skill development and proactive engagement in activities aimed at ensuring a sustainable future.

Growing up as a sponsored child with ChildFund, Abubacarr received educational support, school materials, life skills training, and opportunities to participate in youth development activities. These investments played a critical role in shaping his academic path and leadership potential.

For Abubacarr, in addition to paying for his education, sponsorship gave him the skills and confidence to start a business. Through ChildFund’s business and life skills training, he learned how to manage and grow a company. “The training on life skills and business skills I gained through ChildFund enabled me to start my own company. One of my priorities right now is creating job opportunities for youth. So many are suffering and losing hope because of unemployment and lack of skills, and I want to change that by providing training and meaningful work,” he says. Today, Abubacarr is the Founder and CEO of Space Engineering & Construction Enterprises, which employs and mentors young people in his community, showing the real impact sponsorship can have.
